Norway
Norway is a constitutional monarchy. It has approximated
4.6 million citizens. 510.000 lives in the capital - Oslo.
Business (historical) summary
Much of Norways wealth today is due to the oil resources
found in the North Sea in the 1960's, in the 1970's the
production was a fact. The oil industry developed a specialist
knowledge of off-shore technology and industry to the production
of oil.
The export of fish, cruide oil and complementary industries,
magnesium, ferro-alloys and aluminium is one side of the
economy. Production of hydro energy, shipping, and the tourism
industry is another major sector.
Norway has no state debt, the unemployment rate is about
4%.
Business structure
Norway has few industrial giants, only about 5% of Norwegian
firms have more than 100 employees. 80% has less than 20
employees. Some of the small and medium sized companies
(SNC) have found an opening in an international market for
highly specialized product. Inventiveness and constant product
development are perhaps the hallmark of the SMCs. Some have
hopes of growing large, others deliberately control their
growth in order to maintain the smaller firm's advantage
of buoyancy and flexibility. In addition to the combined
economic clout of smaller companies, they are essential
building blocks of national region-supporting policies.
With Norway's sparse population, jobs cannot all be consentrated
in the cities. Small firms glide easily into local communities
without causing over-specialization, they make it possible
for regional populations to survive. Another important function
is that they can operate as cheap sub-suppliers to other
companies - especially in the engineering industry - because
of low administration expenses and stable costs.
Nordpraktik in Norway
We aim to have two groups of trainees annually, preferably
starting April and September. The time of internship must
be min 4 weeks and max 3 months.
The host company and your own company should have an understanding
about why you should have an internship in the Norwegian
company. The most successful internship would be when you
as a trainee have a project to work on and the aim of your
stay would be either to find out if a future co-operation
is possible or to find out better ways of co-operation between
the two companies than you have today.
Also your aim as a trainee could be to find new clients
or new suppliers to your company. All these information
should be stated in your application.
Leisure time and additional learning
During your stay you will find that within the two first
weeks we will make a program for you and the group to give
you inputs concerning how we do business and how you should
take part in everyday life "at work". We will
also give you a breef summary of working legislation and
related issues. Of course, we will have planned a cultural
program for you but that will happen during your free time
in the weekends. You are free to make suggestions to visit
places you have heard about or you may want to visit friends
other places in Norway during your stay. Just remember that
it is expensive to travel in Norway.
The accomodation will normally be at a hostel with access
to bath and kitchen, or a small flat. You don't have to
bring any household remedy. But bring some sportswear for
outdoor adventure.
